Professional cycling coach Jim Whittaker is pleased to announce the success of several Velotek Coaching athletes. Chris Hall (Team X) recently qualified for the Tour de l'Abitibi at the south central junior development camp. Chris placed 2nd at the junior camp to earn a bid to the only North American World Cup race. Chris has had a solid season and his improving time trialing ability resulted in a silver medal at the Kansas State Time Trial championships as well.

Ben Robertson (GP VeloTek) won the Category 3/4 crit this weekend at the Columbia Cup crit. Ben also placed 2nd in the Category 4 Kansas state crit this past weekend and 5th in the Kansas state road race. Ben’s hard work at junior development camp earned him a coach’s pick invite to the Tour de l'Abitibi.

Chris and Ben have worked hard to further their cycling careers, and as 18 year olds are racing their last year in the junior ranks. Both riders could use support from area cyclists to send them to the Tour De l'Abitibi. To make a donation, email Alta-Sport for their contact info. The total expense for each junior is $1500+.

Steve Rouff (Team X) builds a strong late spring and early summer resume after his February Yuma crash.  After placing 2nd in the Pro1/2/3's at Wichita's River Fest Crit and the Kansas State Crit, Steve broke away with 2 other Missouri riders to place 2nd at this past weekend’s Columbia Cup Crit. With Steve’s positive attitude and work ethic, his first year as a Category 2 rider is picking up where is Cat 3 career ended, off the front!

Professional coach Jim Whittaker says the key to great results is using the power of periodization. If you follow the season of a cyclist using periodization, their performance tends to come in waves. Instead of always being somewhat competitive, you trade periods of average results for periods of excellent race form. By achieving these physical peaks, your odds of earning a career defining win or podium spot increases greatly. Too many riders target every race weekend and short change their real training needs and goals. Ironically, traveling and racing a lot means a reduction in training and eventually your performance deteriorates. Achieving the perfect balance between training, racing, and traveling is the art of coaching. And as any coach will tell you, no two riders are alike.
