3rd Annual Perry Roubaix Road Race                           You can't win if you don't finish.

A warm and sunny start greeted racers with a "wind advisory" alert for North East Kansas. Sustained winds of 25 to 30 mph with gusts to 50 mph made racing challenging. Glenda Taylor (Wheatland) repeated in the women's race event with Tammy Sprays (Free State Racing) improved climbing ability and GP VeloTek's Garrick Valverde lone Junior rider shadowed the women 3 of the 4 laps to finish first in his race. GP Junior Joe Schmalz preformed admirably in his civic cycling duty as the fastest sprinter ever to corner marshal.

The Cat 4/5 race was defined by Dean Parker's (Team X Cycling) lap 5 attack in zone 3 of the hardest section of gravel. As told by racers in the race Dean attacked and newcomer John Sponsler (KCOI) and Keck Hartman (Oz Racing) jumped on Dean's wheel. The pack splintered into 3 groups heading north with the 30 mph tailwind. Dean's group worked to hold off the pack barely. Kurt Albrecht (GP VeloTek) and Walt Bleser (KCOI) motivated the group to chase. John Sponsler  finished a strong 1st followed by Dean Parker and Keck Hartman. Free State Cat 5's Joe Gatti and Mike McBride placed well at 10th and 11th in the 4/5 race and 1st and 2nd overall in the Cat 5's.

The Cat 3/4 race at over 3 hours length was a hard fought battle for roubaix supremacy. Curt Shelman (RCRC) attacked the last hour of the race to draw out Mark Smelser (GP VeloTek), Evan Solida (GP VeloTek), and Eric Struckhoff (FSR) into the winning break. The group of experienced racers worked smoothly to put a healthy 7 minute lead over the chase group of Gary Irick (FSR), Keith Walberg (Wheatland) and Jeff Usher (RCRC). Keith Walburg winner of last years 4/5 race road strongly to finish 6th and experienced racer Gary Irick placed 5th.

Evan Solida fell of the pace on the finish line hill with one lap to go but his brave descending style and time trial ability brought him up to the lead group of Smelser, Struckhoff, and Shelman again. Once together again they were to stay together until the base of the final finishing climb (.4 miles @  5 to 12% grade) it's hard enough to put a half a minute into a weaker rider. GP VeloTek's new recruit Mark Smelser attacked at the base and held on to win by 16 seconds over a strong Free State Racing Eric Struckoff. Evan Solida looked to have 3rd wrapped up when a resilient Curt Shelman snuck up toward the finish line, Evan held on for a 1 second advantage of Curt Shelman.

Note: The Smilin Trooper award goes to Bill Anderson (Team X Cycling) for chuggin along with a great spirit! And Mike Moore (GP VeloTek) for riding even when gravel "ain't his thang".
