Another large field
of 120+ racers lucked out at the 2nd nice weekend at Clinton Lake Sunshine
and moderate temps but lake winds were 20 to 30 mph.

The juniors field and beginner's women's category
continued to impress with large numbers. Bike Source rolled in the Cat
1/2/3 but encounter the "X" factor and KSU's Mark Smelser teetered on
the brink of instant Cat 3 upgrade!
The
largest Team present, Team X Struggled in the 3/4 field and the
independents ruled the day. Phil Todd, Mike Koons and Eric Struckhoff
stole the show and the great form of Major JB Vowell continued from last
week. KSU Koon's went off with 5 laps to go and ammased a
large lead to win the final sprint comfortably.
The Team X Junior squad
coached by Steve Rouff and Jim Whittaker executed their plan perfectly.
Sending Garrick up the road the Oz Jr's and Santa Fe riders were put on
the defense. A tired junior field was no match for Joe Schmalz and Adam
Lang in the sprint.

SRM Power: SRM power meter user Jim Whittaker & Elite
Coach details his
race data from the 3/4 Race.
Time
52:45, Average power 242 watts, Heart Rate 169 bpm, Speed 24.06
MPH, Cadence 77 rpm's (includes periods when a racer stops
pedaling.
Several
VeloTek athletes raced both the 4/5 & 3/4 race and the power
measurement and speed were similiar. Generally Cat 3 and 4 races
with at least 45+ riders are similar if the course is not too
technical. Remember, even with average watts shorter periods of
much greater power is required in the 3's race. And in the 3's
during the sprints more riders are competitive and one rider is
less likely to dominate.

USA Cycling
Licensed Elite coach Jim Whittaker also uses powermeter to coach
his Velotek
Athletes. SRM Power meter's and elite coaching isn't just for
experienced cyclists. Jim Whittaker welcomes all level of
athletes. |
The dominate Cat 4/5 sprinting and
aerobic ability of KSU
Wildcat Mark Smelser was obvious to all! Mark picked up where he
finished off at last week's Spring Fling, stealing points at the last
intermediate sprint Mark never looked back and soloed to the win.
Cowtowner racer and promoter Chris Locke snuck into 2nd place and the
Team X squad dominated the team competition in the Cat 4/5.

The new Alta-Sport
category 4 beginners women drew 10 women and KSU's Carolyn Thompson won.
Kera and Marian rounded out the women's cat 4 top 3.
FSR's
Pam Hinton charged off the front towards the end of the Women's 3/4 race in
an impressive one-woman
break away. Her team mate and sprinting ace Tammy Spray won thanks to her
sprinting prowess and timing ability.
The large cat 5 field was
controlled by the KSU duo of Gerald Hart and Lawrence Simson. Alta Sport
Spring spotlight athlete Joe Christman finished 3rd.
