Race #4 in the
Velotek.com Summer Sizzler Series.
Finally
the perfect day to race, low humidity and a 10am start temperature of 70
made for a perfect race day. The 13 mile Stubbs road course is constantly
rolling up and down with a nice little climb to the finish line. It's the
kind of course that's fun to ride even if you fall off the pace.
The
large Category 4/5 with over 40 riders rolled along fast enough to catch the
Category 3/4 field and averaged near 22 mph. Blue River's Armando Sanchez
decision to race and not ride a local touring ride paid off handsomely with
an impressive sprint win. New racer Dennis Weinbeck of Wheatland's Cycling
Team scored 2nd with the BIG man from Sante Fe Trail's taking 3rd. Come-back
kid Jack Mason who had more than a few people rooting for him placed 4th.
The big
move of the day was a 4 man break partly driven by Keith Walhburg and Craig
Bissell of KCOI. With 2/3's a lap left the 4 man break had 30 plus seconds
on the field. The only thing more unlikely than a Cat 4 break is one that
stays away. The 4-man break almost pulled it off!
The 8
person Junior field saw several new faces to road cycling. Team X
continued
it's local domination with the team work of it's top older riders. Adam Lang
had a break through day by riding strongly on the hilly course with his
teammates. Mr. Velocity one the Juniors 10 - 13 with a long effort and Clay
Weinaug finished his first race of his young career.

Team X's
Cycling Dean Parker put in a tour-de-force by winning the 3/4's by more than
90 seconds. Long, hilly courses seem to suit this 2003 National Cyclecross
champion. KCBC's took 2nd and 3rd honors with Patrick Robinson having
perhaps his best finisher ever. Evan Solida showed good form which may be a
sign of results to come.
University of Kansas cyclist Joe Christman took advantage of the free 1st
timers collegiate entry fee to place 3rd in the Cat 5's.
He put in a strong attack the last few miles but faded. Pretty darn gutsy at
your first race! Look out for this guy.
The category 1/2/3's race of 75 miles was no doubt the most
aggressive of the day. Numerous attacks by Team X, KCBC and Bike Source were
laid down. Sneaky Ed Noll aka Meatball rolled off the front with 1/2 a lap
to go and never looked back. No doubt it was Ed's biggest win to date and
Bikes-n-Boards are proud. Here's a
video clip on Ed's Secret to his Succes. Adam Mills worked hard to set
teamate Shadd Smith up for the win, he came up 5 seconds shy but nipped
youngester Jay Ku to win the pack sprint. Every one took note of Jay's
youthful exebureance! Andy the caboose Chocha did what he loves best, time
trials to round out the top 10. It was a tough day with a few DNF's along
the way.
