Mojo's Winter Wonderland Crit
Series
Race #1
March 1st,
2003

Today's race brought to you by Santa Fe
Bicycle and Coffee Shop, Tailwind Cycle and Fitness, Ruta Maya Coffee, and
Cottin's hardware..
Fifty-five hearty
cyclists ushered spring in with a snowy wet spring criterium bike race. Racers
thanked Andy & Cindy Cocha along with Catherine Hackman and company for
chipping, salting, and shoveling pockets of snow and ice of the course.
Racers were treated to true "Classics" weather,
temps hovered around freezing with light to heavy snow. The same classic
weather that helped harden Steve Tilford and Scott Moniger two Kansas racers
who rank with the toughest Pros in the world.
Four juniors in Alta Sport FREE juniors gut
it out for a 4 mile sleigh ride. Team X's Adam Lang and Garrick Valverde
place 1st and 2nd and
The twenty rider Masters race was a
sprinting clinic by Team X's Steve Rouff. Steve was seen looking back on
several sprints while sitting down. Rumor has it Steve was overheard
muttering something about P.O.D.
Andy Cocha placed 6th in the final sprint in
the PRO/1/2/3 to make his higher category début and finishes 7th in the 20
rider field.
Many racers commented on the strong showing
under brutal conditions. Experienced racers were glad to see so many new
faces in the category 5 and junior fields.

Spring
Training Tip #1, think of your ultimate racing performance as a pyramid.
The bottom or base is your ability to produce energy through fat metabolism
trained by longer rides below 130 or 140 heart rate. The middle of your
pyramid is your ability to produce mid-range tempo power by relying on
your limited stored carbohydrate supplies (glycogen). Solo tempo rides
between 20 to 75 minutes with pedaling cadences between 70 and 90 to develop
muscular endurance and force. Tempo rides are done between 150 and 160, all
heart rate measurements assume your max is between 190 and 200 beats per
minute.
A strong aerobic engine reduces your need to
go anaerobic.
Train your performance pyramid one "layer" at a
time. The key to racing at your highest level is to develop your aerobic
engine so that you can produce sustainable power with minimal fatigue.

Alta Sport events are rain or shine, or
snow.
