Mojo's Spring Fling Criterium

Race #6

April 5th, 2003

It's over! Another below normal temperature day with clouds and at least a light wind out of  the northwest. Ironically a mild wind that saw at least 20 or more people riding in the grass at one time or another.

The category 4/5 race was a blistering 24.5 mph as Team X Cycling and Jack Mason's Wheatland's battled it out. After last weeks implosion Jack came back an overpowered the coalition forces to win the last crit and solidify his 2nd overall. Hats off to Jack Mason Alta Sport athlete spotlight! Brian Roche scored the Most Aggressive rider of the series with his solid team work.

The Masters race saw Phil Gronniger, Bill Marshall and Ben Simons off the front and gone. Jim Whittaker of Team X Cycling made a strong 8 lap chase only to be roasted in no man's land. Steve Rouff, Shadd Smith and Tom Luke swept Jim up to battle out the remaining spots left.

New racer Dan Cool took the Cat 5 win and Michael Moore showed his aggression by going off the front with 4 laps left. Joe Abdallah had a tough day and slipped from 3rd in the series to 4th.

Tanja Hess the German rocket showed why she is the woman to beat locally. Versatile endurance athlete Juli Watkin's placed 3rd for KCBC. Free State's Tammy Spray had an average day but still clinched 2nd overall.

The Pro 1/2/3 race was cut short by the final four TV broadcast which wound up being a pretty casual affair thanks to the Jay hawk running game. The Pro 1/2/3 was anything but casual as the 35 minute race saw a blistering pace with many attacks.  Phil Gronniger of KCBC and Shadd Smith went off the front and when the dust settled Shadd won the day. Josh Crow spiked the pace many times as he muttered something about missing the tip-off.

Team X's Adam Lang battled with fellow sprinter Joseph Schmalz for the final victory. Teammate Garrick Velocity was in charge of keeping the pace high the last 4 laps. Unfortunately, Ashley Noil crashed when her front will was bumped. Ashley could smile later  as she won the youth girls over all series! In the girls race Tori Nelson picked up the win for the day and 2nd in the series.

Tanja and Tammy go head to head.

Multi-sport athlete Juli Watkins showing off for the camera.

Tom Luke's henchmen finally lift KCBC up a notch.

Current and future cycling star Ian Reynolds plays it cool.

The youth race was dominated by Team X Cycling.

Ashley Noll of Bike--n-boards wins the youth girls overall series.

A not quite complete Pro 1/2/3 podium shot!

The future of the sport!
