Velotek Grand Prix - May 1st & 2nd 2004

LC is proud to introduce the 1st annual Velotek Grand Prix. A time based
stage race comprising a time trial, road race and criterium in Lawrence
Kansas. The inaugural event has been selected as a Lance Armstrong
Junior Olympic Race Series event for Juniors age 10-12, 13-14, 15-16, &
17-18. Velotek Training's Elite coach Jim Whittaker is proud to sponsor
the Grand Prix and Velotek Training will be offering free entry into the
race for all juniors racing in junior categories.
The Velotek Grand Prix features race categories for all levels of cyclists.
Highlights:
*FREE Lance Armstrong Junior Olympic Race Series (LAJORS) event for junior cyclists.
*Final Custom Race Leader jersey for boy's and girl's in Juniors 10-12, 13-14, 15-16, & 17-18. (To be delivered July 2004)
*$5000 Cash Purse.
*Time based general classification.
*TEAM GC Prize for Cat 3's. Lowest accumulated time for top 3 team riders.
*Masters 40+ BONUS in Cat 3/4 Field.
*Custom Final Leader's Jersey for Cat 3/4, 4/5, Women 4, and Women Open. Jersey's will be delivered after the race to ensure accurate sizing.
*Race categories from Category 1 to Category 5.
Race Sponsor Jim Whittaker and professional cycling coach had this to say about the May 1st Weekend. By offering a free race entry to juniors in the junior race I hope to remove a barrier to road cycling. As juniors progress up the ranks they'll find the resources to race. However initially parents and juniors find the cost of racing prohibited and especially when the young rider may have not fully committed to his or her sport. A young person won't try a stage race on a whim if they are paying full price unless they are already strongly involved with cycling. I hope free entry fees will encourage more youth to try racing.
Time based races or general classification are something of a rarity in the Midwest. Time based scoring adds expenses and complications when compared to points. However to fully appreciate road cycling a time based stage race is essential. After the passing of Apple Cup, 89'er and other regional time based stage races it is time to offer the time format and forgo the less complicated point’s format. I spent many of my early years racing major stage races based on time but until recently they were hard to find regionally.
